Annual St. Nicholas Celebration for Children in Vulnerable Circumstances

St. Nicholas Day — widely celebrated across Ukraine and much of Europe — can be understood as a cultural equivalent of Santa Claus. It is a tradition centered around personal care, generosity, and attention to each child, where gifts are thoughtfully prepared based on children’s handwritten letters to St. Nicholas, expressing their wishes and hopes.

This is not just a holiday event, but a comprehensive social initiative that combines individually selected gifts, interactive activities, and personalized messages — forming a deeply personal and meaningful experience for every child. In many ways, this tradition is similar in spirit to initiatives like “Shoebox gifts,” where each present is prepared for a specific child with care and intention.

For many children, these encounters become moments when they — sometimes for the very first time — experience what childhood is meant to feel like: safety, warmth, and genuine joy. Through human connection, presence, and care, a fundamental sense of trust in the world begins to rebuild.

As part of the project, the Together team visited over 12 locations across Ukraine including the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center “Okhmatdyt,” children’s shelters, and temporary centers for internally displaced children. In total, the initiative has reached over 5,000 children, each receiving a gift, participating in interactive performances, and having the opportunity to personally meet St. Nicholas.

Each visit created an atmosphere of safety, acceptance, and genuine attention — critically important for children living in instability. Through interactive formats, children developed communication and creative skills, while personalized gifts and messages became not only a source of joy but also a meaningful emotional support resource.

This project demonstrates that even in the most challenging circumstances, consistent care and human presence can restore a sense of stability, dignity, and hope for the future. Together is committed to ensuring that such initiatives remain accessible to every child, regardless of their social or economic background.

This is more than a celebration. It is a space of support, belonging, and human connection — laying the foundation for emotional resilience, trust, and development for children who need it most.
